Does It Exist: Adobe Bridge Without The Suckage? Comments 7 Comments

March 27th, 2007 , ,

Working with lots of various image formats, I often need to explore folders with a sort of “thumbnail view” enabled. Usually, either the OS or Picasa does just fine. Sometimes, however, I’m in need of exploring folders containing Adobe Illustrator AI files, EPS files or other vectorized file formats. In these cases, neither Picasa or the OS will do. Currently, I’m stuck with Adobe Bridge as the only software that can show me vector and bitmap image thumbnails side by side. Alas, Bridge sucks more than a collapsed dwarf star.

Is there an alternative? (I’m looking for a Windows alternative, but Mac users are welcome to chime in).

Since we were shown the new Adobe CS3 icon set a while back, I’ve been, well, interested in how the new Adobe CS3 designs turned out. While they were set to launch tomorrow, March 27th, a canadian Amazon retailer has leaked promo images early.

Thoughts on Crossplatform, Offline Web-Apps & Apollo Comments 6 Comments

March 21st, 2007 , , ,

Adobe just demo’ed Apollo.

To my understanding, Apollo is a platform that is available on major operating systems, which allow web-apps to work as “real applications”. I understand this is similar to the “offline apps” feature that is being worked into Firefox 3. From Adobe Labs:

Apollo is the code name for a cross-operating system runtime being [...]

DOMTab, Automated JavaScript Tab Replacement Comments 7 Comments

March 20th, 2007

DOMtab is a JavaScript that turns a list of links connected to content sections into a tab interface. The script removes any “back to top” links in the section and automatically hides all but the first one when the page is loaded. You can use as many tabbed menus on the page as you want to.

DOMtab seems to work as intended. I can see a few places where this would be really useful.

swfIR, Flash Image Replacement Comments Comment

March 20th, 2007 ,

Using the dark arts of JavaScript and Flash, swfIR gives you the ability to apply an assortment of visual effects to any or all images on your website. Through progressive enhancement, it looks through your page and can easily add some new flavor to standard image styling.

Interesting. I’ve thought of this myself, particularly with regards to images that need scaling (Flash has JPEG smoothing, which browsers to do not).

Conservapedia, The Encyclopedia Re-written For Idiots Comments 21 Comments

March 15th, 2007 , , ,

Mentioned in the news these days is Conservapedia, a wiki written by “conservative christians”. In a nutshell, scientific concepts such as evolution are rewritten at religious leisure to be more fitting for people of faith.

On Conservapedia, “Evolution” redirects to “Theory of Evolution” and, among other things state:

that there is an abundance of scientific arguments showing the earth and universe are both approximately 6,000 years in age

It’s also interesting to see the history of edits to an article such as the one on Atheism, which early on contained this jewel:

Since atheists have no God, as a philosophical framework atheism simply provides no logical basis for any moral standard. They live their lives according to the rule that “anything goes”. In recent years, this has led to a large rise in crime, drug use, pre-marital sex, teenage pregnancy, pedophilia and bestiality.

If it wasn’t for the fact that some people believe this insanity, I’d get a good laugh out of this.

Do We Like Being Lost? Comments 18 Comments

March 12th, 2007 ,

Yesterday I managed to see Lost season 3 episode 11, entitled Enter 77. Having followed Lost intently since the very first episode, it’s now becoming clear to me that there are two types of episodes. There are episodes that reveal tiny tidbits of “Lost mythology” — those are the episodes that deal with what’s actually going on. Then there are the “fleshing out” episodes, episodes that mainly elaborate on the stories of each of the Lost characters. In that way, Lost is very much like Star Trek, which might indicate that Lost is here to stay for a while.

Hey Wordpress Team: How About Theme Options, Officially Supported? Comments 22 Comments

March 7th, 2007 ,

Why isn’t there a 1st party “theme toolkit”? Like the extensive Wordpress plugin APIs, why isn’t there a similar complement to theme options pages? If a 3rd party can make theme options easy, surely the fine Wordpress team can make theme options easier and more secure!

Reviving Dune II Comments 2 Comments

March 3rd, 2007 , ,

Remember Dune II? If you don’t, you missed out on a great game and probably the founding father of the real time strategy genre. If you did play it back in the days, however, you’re likely to fondly remember the delicate balance of harvesting spice while protecting against sandworm attacks, all the while building up your base and preparing your sonic tanks to charge into a Harkonnen base.
