Fauna RC2! [Update 2]
Filed in Fauna, Noteworthy, June 14th, 2007It is with great pride that I present to you this huge update. Yes, it’s been a while since RC. Yes, there’s been two Wordpress upgrades, 2.1 and 2.2. Yes, RC actually broke in one of the upgrades. I’m here to tell you that all of that has been fixed in RC2, plus many great new things have happened.
If you’re upgrading, read this
- Before uploading the new RC2 files, it is recommended that you manually copy all your customized options from the options page (Presentation > Current Theme Options) to a text file, and then enter each option again when RC2 has been installed.
[Update]: Just discovered and fixed two tiny tiny fixes. The rc2 zip file above links to the new zip. If you downloaded the zip 2 hours after this was posted, you should be fine. Otherwise, “functions.php” and “header.php” have had tiny fixes.
[Update]: Allowed commenting.
Noteworthy Changes
- All-new options page! (See a screenshot)
With the offered help of theme author comet Martin Hipp, Fauna is now equipped with a brand new and much improved options page. All the important options from the last version are still available — the big benefits being a usability and aesthetic overhaul, new features such as the ability to easily upload a custom header. Most importantly however, with the code improvements, we have taken the first steps to making sure a great new version of Fauna gets ported to Wordpress.com. - Upload your own theme header!
As mentioned above, part of the new options page gives you an ability to easily upload and crop your own pictures for use as image header. - More easily select between custom Fauna styles
Fauna comes bundled with a light and a dark look, easily selectable from a dropdown box on the options page. Additionally, our Right-To-Left custom style has huge improvements, and should help out Arabic and other RTL language based users. - Fauna specific widgets!
Fauna RC2 openly embraces Wordpress Widgets, a feature that’s been around for a while but is finally integrated in Wordpress 2.2. When you activate Fauna RC2, you automatically get access to a Fauna Sidenotes widget, that allows you to decide yourself where in your sidebar you want your Sidenotes to show up.
Up Next
According to the roadmap, the next version of Fauna will be the final one. Due to the major changes in RC2, however, I cannot promise there won’t be an RC3 before the final version. That all depends on the bugs that pop up after this release. We’ll see!

Fauna RC on Wordpress 2.1 & Fauna RC2 [Update 3]
This is just a quick update to settle a few issues with Fauna RC and the recently released Wordpress 2.1. Some people have been experiencing problems with this combination. While we aren’t quite sure what causes this, here are some possible solutions:
Copy all your customized options to notepad, then click “Delete options”, then fill in the options again.Try going to Manage > Categories, edit your asides category, rename the Slug to sidenotes, save, and then rename it back to asides.- Update 2: Simply create a category called “Sidenotes”. This issue will be fixed in RC2, very soon. (Thanks Adam)
Please let me know if you’ve been experiencing this problem, what you did to fix it, or what else info you can supply. In the meantime, work on Fauna RC2 is slowly being started. I have a feeling this theme will be Wordpress 2.1 only, moving on to some of the newer, optimized functions and features. I’ll also be making tiny changes to accomodate custom style authors.
Update 3: You can now check out a nightly build of Fauna RC2 from Google Code in which this problem is fixed. If you’re not ready to upgrade, you can grab only the single file that has been changed: index.php.
