This just off the wire – it’s an all-out, drag-down fight for the best theme for WordPress: K2 vs. Fauna, no holds barred! :)

Seriously, just when I thought I was going to settle with one base theme and modify it, you go and do a wonderful thing like this. :P Now I’ve got to compare things and see which works better. Looks great thus far, however! Thanks a ton!

Nice. I’ve implemented Fauna with some small changes “on my site”:http://www.stephencollins.org/, but want to mess with the header image. Any chance of a .psd or similar?

bq. This just off the wire – it?s an all-out, drag-down fight for the best theme for WordPress: K2 vs. Fauna, no holds barred! :)

Well, I’d prefer it’s not a fight, for the reasons mentioned on my main site:

bq. K2 is a completely different market and is, in my opinion, much more than a theme. In the words of the authors, a mod. So no reason for K2 to watch out. Kubrick on the other hand ;)

    Steve,

bq. but want to mess with the header image. Any chance of a .psd or similar?

I knew I had forgotten something. Yes of course. I’ll get on it when I get home from work.

  4. Steve Collins said :

Joen, the .psd would be awesome, thanks!

Any chance of the “Nocturnal” theme being available too?

  5. Joen said :

    Steve,

I uploaded the image pack. Look at the homepage on this site.

  6. Brad Cornies said :

Excellent theme! I definitely agree it’ll give K2 a little competition :). I love this theme; not only does it look awesome, but it isn’t completely bloated with unnecessary plugins but yet it still has all of the essentials.

I’m going to have to agree with Steve Collins that a release of “Nocturnal” would make this theme even better then it already is.

  7. Joen said :

I’ll thank you for your kind comments, but I’ll repeat that I don’t personally see this as a competitor for K2. Technically they fullfill different aspects (and K2 is a much more pro piece of code than Fauna, by the way!). Visually, they also achieve different goals, and I dare say K2 has an elegant simplicity that this theme has not.

In short, I don’t like the comparison of those two themes. They’re for each their audience, and I think, compliment each other.

Feel free to compare it to Kubrick though :) – by itself a great theme and the very reason for the existance of Fauna. Kubrick was the inspiration that made Fauna what it is.

bq. I?m going to have to agree with Steve Collins that a release of ?Nocturnal? would make this theme even better then it already is.

It’ll probably happen. But for a little while longer I’m going to hold on to it…

Bug? The Noteworthy heart icon appears as a narrow red line on Firefox in OSX… Works fine in Safari and on everything in Windows.

And another (possibly dumb) question. How are you filling the sidebar with _HTML_ content? For example, the “About Noscope”stuff on the Noscope home page and the Colophon.

  10. Gino said :

    Hi Joen,

The theme is, to me, the best one out there, hands down. Just as an aside, I ran my install through the W3C Validator and it gave a few errors. I haven’t modified anything, but I know you’ve taken some time to make sure the XHTML lines up…

    http://blog.pixeldustfilms.com/

Just as an FYI…let me know if I missed something, as I haven’t touched any code…install of Wordpress is a fresh one as well…

    G

  11. Gino said :

And, just for the record, I just ran http://www.noscope.com/fauna/ through the same validator and it validated fine…

So perhaps one of my posts is causing the issue?

    Thanks, Joen!

  12. Gino said :

Ok, I looked at the code, ya’ll.

I’m using the Brian’s Latest Comments plugin, which is causing validation errors. Anybody else seeing that?

Just thought I’d let you know. Joen’s code is pristine and works great…but the plugin apparently wreaks havoc with some of the compliant code…

  13. Joen said :

    Steve,

bq. Bug? The Noteworthy heart icon appears as a narrow red line on Firefox in OSX… Works fine in Safari and on everything in Windows.

Probably a bug. I’ll create a temporary bug page here on Wordpress where people can submit a comment. I won’t have time to look into it right now but I’ll write it down.

bq. And another (possibly dumb) question. How are you filling the sidebar with HTML content? For example, the ?About Noscope?stuff on the Noscope home page and the Colophon.

Well, on the home page there aren’t any smart database tricks there. I simply edit the sidebar and add my custom HTML code.

On the colophon, however, I’m using a trick that’s also available in Fauna, although maybe not as documented.

I add a “Custom Field” with a key called “sidebar”, and type in the Textile code right in the field, then click “add”. That’s it!

    Gino,

Thanks for the update, and glad you like the theme!

I think the problem with Brian’s Latest Comments is mainly related to special international characters. When these are plainly served as they’re typed, the validator might spew some errors at times. It’s fixable and I’m sure it will be fixed at some point in the future.

my only concern is this: on next beta will a diff file be available? i mean, i changed a lot all templates, for plugins to work… maybe a zip with only changed files would also be nice…

    Yeah! Great theme!

Thank you, Joen for sharing that so cute theme! I’m made some additions in commets template and CSS, and I translated Fauna into russian. It wonderfull theme!

    Sorry my poor english,

    Thanks a lot!

  18. Joen said :

    Task,

I will make a changelog of changed files. You can then use a diff software to see differences yourself, it would be quite a lot of work if I should do it. But don’t worry, I don’t expect huge changes.

author.php is mainly used for multi author blogs. If you look in template-postloop.php, you’ll see that by default I’ve commented out the author that wrote the entry. If you uncomment this, that link will link to the author page which shows some stats.

As for the problem with your archive page, I believe you can solve it by writing in below:

    <br style=”clear:both ” />

  19. Joen, really a *big*, *big* thank you. Such a wonderful theme, in an afternoon I was able to translate it and ever so lightly adapt it for our amateur theatre site, here in Fribourg (Switzerland). I don’t know yet were it will go from here, but it will definitely stay on Fauna’s base!

You can see it in action here: “www.tcf.ch”:http://www.tcf.ch/

The French translation will be available for everyone interested, but I need some time to clean up the files: I changed some code (well, adapted mainly the “Noteworthy” feature to automate the formatting of our “Show” entries) while translating, and the files as such will not work as fauna intended on another server. I hope that by next week you’ll have the French translation, if not give me a shout! ;o)

  20. Joen said :

    Serge,

I’m thrilled you like the theme.

As for translation to French, that’s also fantastic. I would gladly put it up on a langages page here.

However, there should be another way of translating the theme which might be smarter. All text in Fauna are written using a function called @_e()@. This function allows you, as far as I know, to have all language strings in a separate file.

    I’ll look more into it.

  21. Yes, I noticed it… Well, I wanted to get out with that site fast, so that translation is hacked into the files themselves. But I will look at translating it via that function: in fact, having a French WordPress (FR_fr.mo in languages folder) will already translate some strings…

Top notch theme! I just moved from K2 to Fauna. I also integrated My Flickr photos with the FAlbum plug-in, and My Diggs (personalized RSS from Digg.com). Took all of an hour for me to do. Thanks for making it so easy!

    Sadish

  25. Joen said :

    Sadish,

I have no idea why that happens. The function is wrapped in a check for its existance first:

    if (function_exists(’show_manual_subscription_form’)) {
    show_manual_subscription_form();
    };

so it shouldn’t spew errors. Have you made _no_ modifications whatsoever to the code?

  26. Sadish said :

It appears twice in the same sidebar.php.

the second time, it is called without a check for its existence.

  28. Sadish said :

There is no need to be embarrassed. Its still called a ‘beta’ isnt it ?

Also, I want to let u know, I am using your theme as the current theme in my website for now.

Also I have a suggestion. On the sidebar, for ‘calender, links and meta’, you are checking so many pages where you do not want this thing to show up. like not a category page, not a single page, etc.
instead you could just say where you want it to show up. In my version, I only check for is_home().

Also I tried to go to unicef.org and I couldnt find any links to ‘donate’.
If you can find it, let me know.

    Good work my friend.
    Thanks.

Just a quick question regarding links in the sidebar. I have a fairly lengthy list of links, but only some of them are showing up. Is this because Fauna is set to display only a specific category of links? I am guessing that I should peek at the sidebar.php file and look for get_links and see what the settings are there, correct?

I looked on the WP Codex today for documentation on get_links, but was unable to find anything.

Thanks in advance for help that anyone can provide. I’m really liking this theme, BTW, and I have already successfully installed most of the plugins. I am using WP 2.0, FYI, and other than the fact that a “thumbnail” of Fauna doesn’t show up properly in the PRESENTATION panel, Fauna and all the required plugins seem to be behaving as expected.

  39. brendan said :

    Craig,

Can you confirm if the handling of asides and noteworthy works? I suspect my last attempt failed due to a managled db — would be keen to hear if everything works ok.

Filesize? Maybe. Width / height? No, you do that with your customization.

    *Craig*,

I’ll double-check the link code for the sidebar.

As for Wordpress 2.0 compatability issues, I’ll get to work on that asap.

  47. Jack said :

    Joen,
    thanks for reply : )

    yes, you are right..
I would do resize the green image by myself if I can do it..
I have to say that I use the blog(***.wordpress.com) which Wordpress.com offered so I can’t do that with my customization :(

for this reason, I can do nothing on it :(
could you please give me any suggests about it?

  48. Jack, you should probably contact directly the WordPress.com maintainers (there should be a feedback link on the upper right hand of your dashboard for this purpose). I doubt Joen can do much about that himself.

  49. Joen said :

Actually I do have an idea.

With Wordpress 2.0 (based off the fantastic work of Michael Heilemann), it’s now possible to include a customization page / options page for themes. See http://wordpress.org/development/2005/12/wp2/

On this page I suppose I could add fields for image URL, width and height. How about that?

Probably not until Beta 3 though.

  51. Joen said :

I’m slowly catching up with all the comments here sorry.

I’m hard at work on Beta 2, and things are going well.

    *Craig*,

Thanks for the get links bug report. I was getting all the links from category 1. The get links function should simply grab links from “-1″ instead of “1″ to get all the links. Fixed in b2.

    *Brendan*,

Sorry to hear about your mangled db. I hope Fauna didn’t give you any trouble.

I have upgraded my dev site to wp 2, and Fauna works fine including the noteworthy/aside aspect… are you still having problems?

That said, it seems that the migration to simpler rewrite rules for wp2 is really buggy. I’m getting 404s for some posts and some categories. I’m pretty sure this isn’t a fauna thing though.

  52. Joen

That said, it seems that the migration to simpler rewrite rules for wp2 is really buggy. I?m getting 404s for some posts and some categories. I?m pretty sure this isn?t a fauna thing though.

It might be Wordpress bug 2162, having to do with the word Wordpress in your post title/slug (oh, irony). It’s got a fix in there that you can manually apply to Wordpress yourself if you think that this might be your problem.

  53. Joen said :

    Mike,

That does seem to be the problem on the Fauna site, though my main Noscope site also seems to be suffering from more problems, some having to do with a few hacks of mine.

  54. Joen said :

    Mike,

It seems another problem with my main Noscope wp 2 installation is that various conditional statements like is_home aren’t working. Damn.

  55. Oh yeah, I don’t doubt it. That’s why I’m staying away from WP2. For now at least. It’d be great if Fauna Beta 2 worked in 1.5, but I understand if you don’t want to test it out in two environments. I’ll stay on Beta 1 until WP2 matures enough… and they get some QA going on.

  56. Joen said :

bq. For now at least. It?d be great if Fauna Beta 2 worked in 1.5,

Actually, it seems that on a crips and clean non-garbled fresh installation of wordpress 2.0, there were no problems with Fauna at all, meaning I didn’t have to make any WP 2 ONLY changes for Fauna. Only a few – like adding a screenshot, and a little surprise gift I have – but WP 1.5 simply ignores them.

All in all, it seems like Fauna Beta 2 WILL be fully 1.5 and 2.0 compatible (unless something scarey pops up). Now if only the WP team could fix their bugs! Stable release huh?

  57. brendan said :

“It seems another problem with my main Noscope wp 2 installation is that various conditional statements like is_home aren?t working. Damn.”

Welcome to my own personal hell. That’s due in part to pretty bad issues WP2 has with some is_ statements (there’s a couple of show stoppers when used in the loop) — the other half of the equation is the db.

You can’t upgrade the whole kit and caboodle, basically. The only way I could get the upgrade to happen was to backup the ‘default’ wp table set only and upgrade that. Forget any table that isn’t part of the core db and things become more predictable.

In my case I exported the core tables, ran a “search and replace” to change the wp_ prefix and then imported them back in.

This is just imho, obviously, but 2.0 isn’t quite ready for release. A brand new install, sure, great — upgrade..? my advice is to ‘tread real careful like’. :)

  58. Craig Hartel said :

My site upgraded just fine! :) I’ve been upgrading the same database since version 0.70 and while I can’t claim to have never had any problems, for the most part, WordPress has worked just fine.

Maybe I’m just not pushing the software to the edge of its capabilities like some people do!

  59. Joen said :

    Glad to hear it Craig.

I think (hope) my db upgraded fine… but I’m still having major problems on my main Noscope site: basiclally /journal is a 404 page. Probably a virtual / real folder conflict… it works when I reset the permalinks to non-htaccess ones.

    Argh.

    Very very nice theme.

I just wish theme authors would tell me “hey I’m using your theme toolkit”. That would be much more making my day than relying on chance when having a look at my referrers to find out that someone uses a theme that uses my kit.

(of course adding a credit link in footer like on theme Tiga would *really* make my day, but well, you can’t have everything :)

Again, very nice theme. I’m curious to see if / how the admin part will be integrated into wp.com.

  64. Joen said :

    Hey Ozh,

Sorry for not notifying you right away, and thank you for supplying such a wonderful toolkit.

To be quite honest, I thought it was enough to leave the credit on the actual Options page in.

Where else would you like a credit? I have to admit it seems to be a bit confusing to add it to a global theme footer, when nobody but the actual administrator can see the options page. Please let me know how I can compensate you on this, and again, sorry for not notifying you right away. Until the very last minute, I wasn’t sure I was going to include an options page at all.

  65. Ozh said :

Hey, that’s ok :) I’m more than happy anyway that people actually use my kit, and I’m starting to see really neat theme such as yours.

As for credit, nothing is required of course, and you can do whatever you’re pleased with. A theme author recently made one with a credit link in the footer, that’s almost turning me too much on :)

  66. shamsulazhar said :

    Hey Ozh,

It’s the least I can do to say “Thank You” for all your hard work. Give credit where credit is due ;).

Just wanna drive you up in the Digirati ranking ;).

Thank you again for the theme toolkit, keep up with the great plugins.

  68. Brendan said :

bq. What does everybody think about some glorious rounded corners?

Currently only a handful of (generally gecko powered) browsers handle rounded corners. It’s easy enough to add the required code to the CSS.

Ozh, as for your theme toolkit, while it’s great to see and I’m sure a lot of people have benefited from it, suggesting that it’s a shame credit wasn’t given (for what is essentially a back end tool) in the blog template (that the causal reader is none the wiser for) is a bit rich.

Granted, perhaps a quick ‘thanks to x for their great x plugin’ might have been “nice” as part of the theme announcement post, however to expect people to announce every little bit of code they use and where it came from you’re going to be a bit disappointed. :)

  69. Ozh said :

Brendan : I’m not asking for anything, really. There are a few themes around using my kit and one mentionned me in its footer, I thought that it was uber nice, but I’m not asking for it.

Really, the only thing I’d want would be that whenever someone releases a theme using my kit, I would be told about it (just a trackback or anything) so I can just be aware of the theme. That’s all that is keeping me motivated to publish things myself.

  70. Joen said :

Regarding the theme toolkit, it is a goddamn fantastic piece of work. Make no mistake here. I hope to actually quell the discussion a bit, because it’s not fair to the software. So here’s what I’m going to do:

    * I’ve updated this post to include proper credit
    * I’ll link from Fauna features, permanently, to the toolkit
    * I’ll add credit to the readme file
    * I’ll leave in the options page credit
    * But I’m not going to add permanent footer credit to the toolkit (although it’s a breeze for end users of fauna, to add this themselves!
Heck, if you look at the footer code of Fauna, you’ll notice I’m writing “I won’t kill you for removing the credits below, but if anyone asks about it, please tell them where you got this theme” next to the Fauna link. The difference being, the fauna link serves a purpose: to inform people of what they’re looking at, and that it’s based on free code.

Now if anyone can come up with any more places it would be prudent to link to this toolkit (it deserves applause for crying out loud, it really IS that good), then please type it in right here. I’m hoping this will not become a problem.

    *Dan*,

bq. What does everybody think about some glorious rounded corners?
I say add them as a configurable option

Well, as Brendan says, you can currently add this easily by writing the following in your stylesheet:

    .box {
    -moz-border-radius: 8px;
    }

I _could_ add this as a configurable option, but I prefer not to, for the simple reason it will confuse new users since it only works in Mozilla.

The other option would be to use “Nifty Corners”:http://pro.html.it/esempio/nifty/ which during early development, I considered quite a few times. The reason I ultimately chose not to do this, was to cut through the clutter and simplify the code. I want to keep things simple here, so as to encourage hacking (though this might cause extra work if you don’t wait til the final version). Finally, it adds an extra layer of complexity seeing as Nifty Corners uses @body onload@ events.

If, however, there’s overwhelming support, I might add Nifty Corners support as an option.

I can’t make new categories in the sidebar. ‘Links’ and ‘Meta’ are the only thing shown, despite my attempt to make serveral categories ind the editor. (eg. blogroles).

Isn’t possiple to make categories for different kinds of links on the main blog page?

I hope you can help me.

    Jonas

  79. Joen said :

    Jonas,

Right now, adding the code to show categories on the homepage (currently it’s only shown in the archives, which have to be manually created too — thats easy though), has to be done manually.

Open sidebar.php in a template, and go to line 141 (it says “/* Category List */”).

    Now change it from

    /* Category List */ if (is_category() || is_page("archives")) {

    to

    /* Category List */ if (is_category() || is_page("archives") || is_home()) {

    That should do it.

Oyvind, the “36 years ago” problem should be fixed in a newer version of Time Since. If not, its a problem with my server, not fauna.

JC, it would be possible to release a Fauna theme for ZenPhoto, and then integrate with a Wordpress website. However, I want Fauna for Wordpress out first, and ZenPhoto 1.0 out too before I do such a thing.

    Matthias,

I think Wordpress.com is using Beta 1 of Fauna… that problem is fixed in Beta 2.

I don’t know if this is a bug or just an issue that I’m having, but I’ll try and explain.

My site currently has two authors … Heidi and Doug. When you click a post authored by Doug … it says “Blah Blah” was written January 23rd, 2006 by Doug, and filed under Uncategorized.” You can then click Doug’s name and be taken to his author page. However, the link to Heidi’s author’s page goes to a 404 Error: Not Found.

I’ve tried deleting and readding the user Heidi with no luck. I’ve also tried acting as Doug and authoring the post as Heidi, but that creates a new problem. In that case, Heidi’s author page is then linked to that of another (third) user.

I’m sorry if that’s not the clearest. Please let me know if you have any tips or hints. Thank you!

    http://mapofthedead.co.uk/weblog/wp-admin/themes.php?page=../themes/fauna/functions.php

I asked over on the TxD forums and it was confirmed that the ‘../’ in the URL was triggering the mod_security system and causing the 412 error. Is there anyway the theme options can be accessed differently or am I going to need to disable mod_security?

The theme is _intended_ to be highly hackable, so don’t feel bad for skipping this.

Usually, in my experience, comments templates are left fairly unhacked, so you could consider updating just those. The Quote Comments feature is really worth it if I may say so myself :)
If you do, remember to also update meta/scripts.js, it contains the JS for the quoting.

Yep. In fact, I made some heavy work with just that, a long while ago. Unfortunately, I pretty much abandoned the project, since the code was so overly complex that it did not fit with the Fauna philosophy.

However, I think an update may be on the way, and I would have no problem doing an “addon” to Fauna (i.e. a BTC ready comments.php file).

Oh and finally, I think I’ll be working on a re-coloured (and darker) version of the theme for my other site; levibuzolic.com, so if that goes well I’ll be sure to send it over your way.

    Love your work, Joen!

Fantastic work, Levi! Glad to have your support.

The link category is a good idea, probably. I’d appreciate it if you sent me the code you’ve done, and I’ll see how it works, and whether or not I want to include it.

As for the re-coloured version, even better. Tip though: if you can manage to keep ALL your CSS in a separate file, like fauna-default.css, then in Beta 3.1 which is delayed more than I want to, I’ll be making a text-field in the options page where you can type in your own stylesheet URL, and it’ll override the default. That might be a good idea in order to make it an “addon” of sorts.

I’ll send you the slightly re-worked fauna-default.css from the current beta 3.1.

As for the live preview plugin, I’m using this one:

    http://www.noscope.com/fauna/2006/01/live-preview-w-textile-plugin

    Upload and activate. Voila.

While I do consider the neon aspect of the header a central part of the design, it’s also a clear part of my philosophy with this theme that it’s highly hackable and customizable.

    So… what’s your favourite colour?

Based on what I know about colour psychology, I’m thinking that some dark or desaturated shade of green would be the most calming.

It sounds like a problem either with your webserver or your wordpress installation. Fauna is not using any PHP headers that could cause a precondition failed message.

The problem with Dreamweaver is that it would require you to have a personal webserver setup. This is possible, i use it, but it’s not really easy to do.

The thing is, when we’re talking PHP, you need a server application to “render” the code, as opposed to HTML which can be read by the browser itself. Since Dreamweaver cannot render the PHP code you can’t split screen there.

I use “Xampp”:http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html for my personal web server, but it might be a bit hard core for what you’re looking at. I think maybe just editing online, live, is your best bet, unfortunately.

ouch. this update was so different from the beta 2 that i was running that i’ve lost pretty much all hope of configuring this to look like my last installation did. huge changes, especially with all of the css being swapped around. my beta 2 custom css settings are null and void now that these global css classes have been moved into the main styles.css file. i guess that’s beta though, i should have expected. luckily i named the installation folders according to their beta version and was able to easily revert back to beta 2. anyway, thanks for the growing attention to the fauna theme, your updates and integrations never cease to amaze.

  168. Joen said :

    *digitaljhelms*,

Sorry about that. The problem is, to fix the bugs present and move the theme closer to final, I had to do those changes. Trust me, they weren’t easy to do, and I _knew_ when doing them that people like you would be annoyed. So sorry about that.

On the opside, Beta 4 *should* be so close to final that any future changes shouldn’t mess with the layout in the same way that beta 2 – 4 did. Additionally, I’ve made it easier to add your custom stylesheet while keeping “the core clean”. Quite simply, the options page now lists fauna-default.css as the default stylesheet. This is the stylesheet that contains all fonts, colors, images and backgrounds. In other words, you could make a copy of that file, rename it “mystyle.css” and type it in to the options page.

I really believe and hope that from this release and on to the RCs (which I believe will be next), it’ll be smoother sailing.

I’m thinking it might be the “Live Chat” box that’s wider than what the sidebar allows, hence pushing it below. Could you try commenting it out just temporarily to see if that’s the problem? If it is, you probably need to make the textfield less wide.

Does this happen ONLY when you are using the Fauna theme? Or does it also happen with the default theme?

I’m starting to think that shortstats attaches itself to it might be some Wordpress header or footer function call that I’ve somehow missed.

Well, no, in their current form they will not become part of the “core” of Fauna. The issue at hand is speed and stability. In the various test environments I have tried AJAX comments, comments were slow to post and sometimes didn’t appear at all. I’m suspecting this is related to a) the way Wordpress handles comments, b) anti spam plugins which are necessary, c) the fact that the Wordpress core is not built to handle AJAX comments.

I have no problem with AJAX commenting systems per se… for instance, the digg.com commenting system which uses AJAX is very cool, and works very well.

I see two solutions to this:

    # Build AJAX commenting right into Wordpress, and optimize so it’s as good and fast as Digg.com
    # If this can’t be done, wrap AJAX commenting into a plugin, so when enabled, the default commenting system is replaced by AJAX commenting.

  197. Joen said :

    Not on Wordpress.com…

But I suppose i’m merely asking about the security features in the options page, i.e. could someone else access a WP options page without login — which now that I think about it should probably be Wordpress’ responsibility.

    - The ‘edit this’ link for trackbacks and ping backs I think should be in the main box to the right of the title and date/time.

    - If the calandar is turned on, it should show up on year, month & day archive pages.
    - The WP Calandar CSS should set the days of the week letters to be centered in their cell. Currently they’re defaulting to the left and it’s very noticeable in a wide liquid layout.

I think the sidebar needs some reordering done, the most relevant and most important sidebar elements don’t seem to be at the top in some cases.

An issue with the time/date’s has been created with the beta 5.

If you have a look at the post-meta on an install without Time Since installed it reads “Filed in Category 8:23pm by Author” which clearly reads incorrectly and isn’t very useful as the time of day on the journals index page isn’t going to tell us much.

So you could always change the wordpress time field to be something like “\o\n F jS, Y \a\t g:ia” which makes the post-meta and sidebar post-meta read much better, but then comes the issue of the Pingbacks and Trackbacks reading something like “pingbacked Posted April 27th, 2006, on April 27th, 2006 at 11:46 am

Oh there’s another little bug, the word “Posted” needs to be removed from the trackback/pingback so it doesn’t read “…trackbacked Posted…”

So then you could always hard code the full date/time into the postloop file, but that means everything in the theme is perfectly automated or optionable other than this!

So I propose that you maybe add yet another option to the options page to set in a custom date/time string for the post-meta that defaults to something like “\o\n F jS, Y \a\t g:ia“.

Maybe an even better idea is adding an extra little funtion to the custom-functions file that adds a new date/time function, like; fauna_date(); or something.

Anyway, sorry for the massive buglist to keep you busy!

    Levi,

I just want to point out that I really appreciate your feedback like this. As you hopefully know, I’ll go through all of those comments and fix them once I get to it.

    Two things:

    1. I’m sorry I haven’t put up darkfrost into a theme directory yet, trust me I want to, I’ve just got my hands full.

    2.

bq. So far I?ve found one little bug, the Noteworthy icon doesn?t seem to default to the heart instead it defaults to nothingness.

Well, I’ll “fix this” in the way that I’ll make sure upgrading is easier. However, it is “kinda” expected behavior since those are new options that were added, and those options default values won’t be filled in unless you delete all options, deactivate the theme, and activate it again. This is also the reason most of the Beta 5 upgrades I’ve seen don’t have rounded corners on the header… they should be enabled by default, but “defaults” are only defined on activation.

  223. Levi said :

Ah, I see. Maybe I’ll have a look at the theme options setup and see if there is a better way to define defaults so they actually default on first run.

Don’t be too worried about darkfrost and the daunting bug-list, I can understand how busy you must be so take your time and if you want any help with anything what-so-ever, just say so.

Hell, I’d be happy to try and fix some of these bugs/issues I’ve found, you just tell me which onces you want changed and I’ll get stuck into it. I just figured there is no point trying to fix some of these bugs without your knowledge on how you want it to be when it’s working properly. :)

Thanks again for an awesome theme.

Actually they DO default on first run, but an upgrade is not considered “a new” run…

As for the bugfixes, I really appreciate you wanting to help out, which I’m open to. I’ll think about it the next few days and see how it could work out. Basically, since B5 is feature complete, the remaining issues will just be to make sure everything works like it’s supposed to, and that it’s as clean as elegant as possible.

I?m currently using this theme for my store blog and love it! Thanks for making this available.

I was wondering though, how can I get rid of the top part where it says the name? (like on this site it says fauna) It links to the same place as the blog link does. I can only get to go away if I remove the blog name, but then that messes with the tagline and feed. Any suggestions?

    Hi Yahaira,

Try editing the file called fauna-default.css and add this code:

    h1 {
    display: none;
    }
Good luck, and let me know if it works.

Ok, I saw that subcategories are only considered if there is a blog entry for the corresponding meta-category. Is this intended? I guess there are often cases where the meta-category will not have entries. But maybe just in my case. Cheers, Christian

Hi, Joen, thanks for this little gem. I am starting to love this theme by days. However, could you point me where I can find information about supported plug-ins, and also what are default.pot and defailt.po files for?

  250. Joen said :

    Eberth,

I don’t quite know what happened to your site, but if I find a solution, I’ll post it here.

    AsceticMonk,

The list of supported plugins is available on the features page: http://www.noscope.com/fauna/features/

The default.po, and default.pot are for localizing the theme. This is only if English is not your native language, or English is not the language you want to use on your blog. In those cases, you can either use the PO and POT files for quick translation of the theme (these files contain ALL text strings in the entire theme), or you can be lucky and download an already translated “MO” file and you’re all set. I think, for now, Fauna is only available in English and German, but I think Persian is on the way.

The scripts.js file contains a few javascript functions used various places in the theme. One such place is when you click “Formatting your comment”, that’s actually a Javascript function that opens that section. Another thing it is used for, is the “quote comment” functionality.

The .svn folder is a mistake. It shouldn’t be there, and you can safely delete it. We’ll make sure it’s not in the final release.

Hi Joen, I found a bug while modifying the theme last night. When a custom background image is provided, the generated CSS definition omitted the no-repeat property. I think it needs to be exposed in the theme option panel, where user can choose whether to repeat or no repeat. For example, on my site, I only changed the color of the background image, and I had to dig in function.php to manually add no-repeat property in it.

Yes, it is possible to add 3 columns, but it’s not something I see coming to Fauna in the near future. A 3 column layout would have to be an addon to Fauna 1.0 final, which is months away.

So to put things plainly, you could write your own Fauna style that had a 3 column layout, but I don’t see one coming in the near future. Unfortunately.

  291. lewism said :

Congratulations to all, this is inspired design with lots of hard work to back it up! I will be updating soon.

  292. Hi Joen! The new version looks great, and I have already updated my site to use it. I can tell all the hard work that went into updating this new theme. I can tell that you put a lot of time into not just creating the theme, but Doing It Right. I can immediately tell the benefits of hosting the code at Google and getting help from others.

As usual, I’ve got some nit-picky things that I think could be corrected before you release version 1.0. Here’s my site for reference: http://www.mikegoodspeed.com/

    1.

If you look at the sidenote on the sidebar, the feed link goes here:

    http://www.mikegoodspeed.com/blog/categories/feed/

but I think it should go here:

    http://www.mikegoodspeed.com/blog/categories/sidenotes/feed/

    2.

If you look at the Current Theme Options -> Custom stylesheet URL, you say

    The default is styles/default/default.css.

I just wanted to let you know that it’s very easy to select the period at the end of that line when trying to go back to the default. Maybe reword it so that the code isn’t at the end of the sentence (”%s is the default.”) or something. In the next line when you say that the stylesheet must be in a certain location, you don’t include the period and make it easy to copy.

    3.

IMHO, the ASCII art isn’t very professional, but if you’re going to have it, you can’t use tab indentation because tabs are different sizes in different editors. Line 3 of style-ieonly.css includes a tab or two that pushes that line to the right in the Wordpress editor.

    4.

By putting the default fauna style style spreadsheet in styles/default/default.css you make it impossible to edit that file from in Wordpress’ theme editor. Now if I want to make changes through Wordpress’ theme editor (every version I go in and set -moz-border-radius:10px on the box class) I have to make them in style.css which gets applied to all fauna styles, even if I only want that change in the default style. I understand why you are putting it in the directory structure (to show other developers by example where it goes) but I just wanted to put this out there and see if you think the pros of being a good example style outweigh being editable in Wordpress’ theme editor.

And here’s a question for you:

If I go into the theme options and select a background to play around with for my blog, selecting things like background repeat, and horizontal and vertical align, and then go back to the default wallpaper, will my choices on those 3 radioboxes effect the default wallpaper? There is no “no-choice” option, and when you use radioboxes, once you select something, one item always has to be selected. I haven’t used this feature ’cause I’m scared!

    And an unrelated question:

I’d like the ability to, when people comment on a post, the comment appears on the current page without a page reload, all AJAX-y style. That’s a plug-in, right? Do you know of one that works with your theme? I’ve seen it done with other themes, but I can’t find any. This is a lazyweb question so feel free to ignore.

    Thank you! I appreciate it.

Now to your feedback, (which is also great).

    1. Will examine and try to fix for 1.0.

    2. Will examine and try to fix for 1.0.

    3. Personally, I think it looks fun. If more people dislike it, of course I’ll remove it. For now, I’ll write down that we should change the tabs to spaces.

    4. Personally I have always liked the _ability_ to edit the CSS in Wordpress, but disliked the _way_ the editor works. In my opinion, Wordpress should allow people to either browse the style directory in some way, or at least type in the filenames themselves.

This was not the reason I changed the way custom styles worked, though. I did that, to simplify downloading and installing them, and to keep things uncluttered, especially when a lot of images were used. I believe that upgrading either a custom style, OR Fauna versions, will be easier with this structure.

bq. If I go into the theme options and select a background to play around with for my blog, selecting things like background repeat, and horizontal and vertical align, and then go back to the default wallpaper, will my choices on those 3 radioboxes effect the default wallpaper? There is no ?no-choice? option, and when you use radioboxes, once you select something, one item always has to be selected. I haven?t used this feature ?cause I?m scared!

This is a “known issue” to me, and unfortunately I have very few ideas how to fix it. Usability wise, you’re completely right of course. It could be much better. The reason it is like it is now, is for technical limitations. In other words, I’m _very_ open to ideas.

bq. I?d like the ability to, when people comment on a post, the comment appears on the current page without a page reload, all AJAX-y style. That?s a plug-in, right? Do you know of one that works with your theme? I?ve seen it done with other themes, but I can?t find any. This is a lazyweb question so feel free to ignore.

There are a few “addons” planned for Fauna, and I’d welcome an AJAX commenting addon. The reason it’s not part of Fauna, however, is that I have not yet seen a single Wordpress blog use AJAX comments with success. It’s either slow, unstable, or a combination of the two.

By the way, one in the forums had trouble using faunalive with RC — I know how much people love faunalive, if you need anything from me to get it work, just let me know. Did I ever send you a vector version of that illustration, btw?

  297. mo said :

    *Thank You!*

haha, yeah I guess there are some fauna users who like the fauna + “faunalive”:http://360.pictor.us/?page_id=4 combination, personally I liked the background options which have been already addressed in RC, and the corner colors which helped montage transparency upon using custom backgrounds – all of which ALL have been addressed in RC. I haven’t looked at the new code yet, but I’m pretty sure that makes my ‘RC’ add-on a less pervasive one! :)

I’ve learned some php last summer, so I will try to clean up the code.. make it xhtml compliant.. make it look more streamline to your fauna style.. YET there is still one bug, which has kinda stumped me.. I have already mentioned it in the last paragraph of “this”:http://360.pictor.us/?page_id=4#comment-278 comment.

    > help? really?! haha, YES!
I have seen your awesome flash work, and I know you’re pretty much what they call the expert in flash if flash ever had one – so I wonder if you will be kind enough to look at the problem description, and see why this happens.. maybe its something obvious that I’m just not aware of. (?) If so I will email you a more detailed explanation of the problem with the @.fla@ source attached for further investigation. Of course I will try my best to find a solution in parallel to your help.

    > But about the vector version. Yes! I think I downloaded a photoshop file from your website some time ago. Thanks for the offer!

Joen, I always have appreciated your work and support all the way!

Thanks again for the compliment and the announcement! I have to say that Fauna RC is far easier to work with than Beta 5. I wish the other themes that I use where as organized as Fauna.

    Hi mo,

Sorry for the late reply, and thanks for your kind comments. Of course I’ll help you, just email me and we’ll figure something out.

love the new changes, I’m especially enamored with the new options page.

one question though, for some reason no matter if the left or right sidebar option is clicked, the sidebar is on the left.

  302. Joen said :

    Hi yahaira,

I love your fauna customization, but it is also the cause for the sidebar location not working! In RC, the default style has changed, so that the right side location is default. In the previous style, which I see you still use (http://pureknits.com/wordpress/wp-content/themes/fauna/fauna-default.css) the default location was to the left. And so, you have to copy the new code from the new default style (styles/default/default.css) to your customized fauna-default.css in order to get the sidebar to work.

    Finally I’ve finished faunalive RC!

    Some mentionable improvements include..
    php code optimization.
    Flash actionscript optimization.
    Flash publishing optimization.
Removed duplicate code, or void code.. and such. The code looks very clean now.
Made the flash Valid XHTML 1.0
    Included IE Active-X activation workaround.
Improved faunalive home page look; added a sample Techno color chart.
Added three new languages. (Danish, Farsi and Polish)
Turned off ’scroll’ with a switch variable to avoid the ‘firefox tab stall’ [you can hack it on again]
Thus, faunalive is now completely glitch free.

Evening Joen, just thought I’d drop by and show off the latest incarnation/bastardisation of Fauna I’ve made. A lot of the codebase has changed (div stacking order, for instance), but the framework is pretty-much all Fauna.

http://newklear.org/blog/ is the main one I’ve been working on, it’s about 85% complete so far. http://cogito.underthetable.be/ is the other mod of it, but that’s slightly less advanced in terms of code progress.

Wanted to thank you and your team for making such a sexy layout, it’s one of the most versatile customisation bases around for Wordpress :)

    @Ben: indeed very impressive!
    very nice ‘fauna-like’ themes,
I really enjoy their design ;)

After 3 or 4 days of pondering to make things actually work.. I think I finally got it, haha.. I wonder though is it working only on my computer screen,, phew that was not easy!

faunalive now “degrades gracefully” to the default or chosen jpg header, when flash doesn’t load, or if version is not available. (Also, jpg header is not downloaded when flash successfully loads.)

First of all, this is the best Wordpress theme currently existing! Great work!

Secondly, I took the liberty of quickly creating a little integrated Zen photo theme. I didn’t put a lot of effort in it, but I could surely clean it up some and release it to my fellow fauna supporters, if there’s any interest in it. Check it out “here”:http://kim.syndromedia.se/gallery/.

    Joen,

I love “fauna!” I think it is one of the best Wordpress themes out there. I’m not a programer, so I always had a hard time picking out a theme that was easy for me to use. I almost gave up and then I found “fauna” and I was able to get my blog up and running. Thank you so much for all your hard work! I just updated my blog with the “RC fauna” and it was such a smooth transition.
    Thanks again.

    Take care,

    Alyssa

Thanks for all your work on this great theme.

    I’ve just installed Fauna RC2 (June 14th, 2007) on a blog.

I discovered a bug: there are three lines (52, 54, 72) in comments-popup.php that refer to (TEMPLATEPATH . ‘template-something.php’). These should be (TEMPLATEPATH . ‘templates/template-something.php’).

Fauna is really a great theme. It’s fully-feature, but very lean and easy to customize. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to get away from WP’s default theme.

Any help with this would be splendid, and thanks again for this great download.

    Yes.

Open the file called “style.css”, and add the following:

    body {
    font-size: 150%;
    }

If that’s too large, write 120% or something.
