Fauna Beta 2
Beta 1 was fairly stable, but uncovered a few bugs and shortcomings. Most of these have been fixed, and a few new surprises have been added. Go grab your copy, and hack away!
* *Fauna Beta 2 (January 4th, 2006)*
Among the biggest changes are:
* Options page
I didn’t think I was going to add one, but Wordpress.com users will enjoy this. Select from 3 bundled headers!
*Note:* The options page is currently powered by the fantastic *Wordpress Theme Toolkit by Ozh*. Huge credit and thanks to him for providing this toolkit. If you’re a theme developer yourself, take a look at it. It’s a 1 hour options page for your theme.
* Breadcrumbs on pages
Makes navigation simpler.
* Made sure it worked on Wordpress 2.
It does. It’s Wordpress 2 that doesn’t work :).
Be sure to view the full changelog.
I love it thank you so much this is by far my most favorite theme. I have using some headers i made myself. :)
so soon…I can not believe that.
Thank you so much!
thanks very much.
this is my favorite wordpress theme..
Very very nice theme.
I just wish theme authors would tell me “hey I’m using your theme toolkit”. That would be much more making my day than relying on chance when having a look at my referrers to find out that someone uses a theme that uses my kit.
(of course adding a credit link in footer like on theme Tiga would *really* make my day, but well, you can’t have everything :)
Again, very nice theme. I’m curious to see if / how the admin part will be integrated into wp.com.
Hey Ozh,
Sorry for not notifying you right away, and thank you for supplying such a wonderful toolkit.
To be quite honest, I thought it was enough to leave the credit on the actual Options page in.
Where else would you like a credit? I have to admit it seems to be a bit confusing to add it to a global theme footer, when nobody but the actual administrator can see the options page. Please let me know how I can compensate you on this, and again, sorry for not notifying you right away. Until the very last minute, I wasn’t sure I was going to include an options page at all.
Hey, that’s ok :) I’m more than happy anyway that people actually use my kit, and I’m starting to see really neat theme such as yours.
As for credit, nothing is required of course, and you can do whatever you’re pleased with. A theme author recently made one with a credit link in the footer, that’s almost turning me too much on :)
Hey Ozh,
It’s the least I can do to say “Thank You” for all your hard work. Give credit where credit is due ;).
Just wanna drive you up in the Digirati ranking ;).
Thank you again for the theme toolkit, keep up with the great plugins.
What does everybody think about some glorious rounded corners?
I say add them as a configurable option!
bq. What does everybody think about some glorious rounded corners?
Currently only a handful of (generally gecko powered) browsers handle rounded corners. It’s easy enough to add the required code to the CSS.
Ozh, as for your theme toolkit, while it’s great to see and I’m sure a lot of people have benefited from it, suggesting that it’s a shame credit wasn’t given (for what is essentially a back end tool) in the blog template (that the causal reader is none the wiser for) is a bit rich.
Granted, perhaps a quick ‘thanks to x for their great x plugin’ might have been “nice” as part of the theme announcement post, however to expect people to announce every little bit of code they use and where it came from you’re going to be a bit disappointed. :)
Brendan : I’m not asking for anything, really. There are a few themes around using my kit and one mentionned me in its footer, I thought that it was uber nice, but I’m not asking for it.
Really, the only thing I’d want would be that whenever someone releases a theme using my kit, I would be told about it (just a trackback or anything) so I can just be aware of the theme. That’s all that is keeping me motivated to publish things myself.
Regarding the theme toolkit, it is a goddamn fantastic piece of work. Make no mistake here. I hope to actually quell the discussion a bit, because it’s not fair to the software. So here’s what I’m going to do:
* I’ve updated this post to include proper credit
* I’ll link from Fauna features, permanently, to the toolkit
* I’ll add credit to the readme file
* I’ll leave in the options page credit
* But I’m not going to add permanent footer credit to the toolkit (although it’s a breeze for end users of fauna, to add this themselves!
Heck, if you look at the footer code of Fauna, you’ll notice I’m writing “I won’t kill you for removing the credits below, but if anyone asks about it, please tell them where you got this theme” next to the Fauna link. The difference being, the fauna link serves a purpose: to inform people of what they’re looking at, and that it’s based on free code.
Now if anyone can come up with any more places it would be prudent to link to this toolkit (it deserves applause for crying out loud, it really IS that good), then please type it in right here. I’m hoping this will not become a problem.
*Dan*,
bq. What does everybody think about some glorious rounded corners?
I say add them as a configurable option
Well, as Brendan says, you can currently add this easily by writing the following in your stylesheet:
.box { -moz-border-radius: 8px; }I _could_ add this as a configurable option, but I prefer not to, for the simple reason it will confuse new users since it only works in Mozilla.
The other option would be to use “Nifty Corners”:http://pro.html.it/esempio/nifty/ which during early development, I considered quite a few times. The reason I ultimately chose not to do this, was to cut through the clutter and simplify the code. I want to keep things simple here, so as to encourage hacking (though this might cause extra work if you don’t wait til the final version). Finally, it adds an extra layer of complexity seeing as Nifty Corners uses @body onload@ events.
If, however, there’s overwhelming support, I might add Nifty Corners support as an option.
Thanks for the mention in your announcement Joen, that’s really the most and only important thing to me.
I should have mentioned you in that post from the start. It was a blunder on my part, sorry about that. Let me know if there’s anything else I can do. I seriously do think it’s wonderful work you’ve made.
hi joen,
I’ve downloaded and installed correctly your fauna theme, but now I have a little problem:
at the top of the page of my blog appears this incorrect line of code:
Warning: preg_grep(): Second argument to preg_grep() should be an array in D:\Inetpub\webs\matesejazzit\public\blog\wp-content\themes\fauna\themetoolkit.php on line 39
what I have to do to fix it?
thanks too much for your interest, Seneka
I vote for nifty corners.
Seneka,
I’ll look into the problem, and post here when I find the cause and/or a solution.
When you hover over the “Ongoing discussions” on the front page, it says “posted 36 years ago”? =)
Just a quickie to thank you for sharing. I am having a blast scanning through the miles of code; Fauna is definitely not a typical theme.
This a dream come true! Noscope’s theme for my own site! I’ve yet to try this since i’m at work now…..but one thing comes to mind —- any gallery support for ZENphoto? or some other gallery plugins?
Thanks joen, bless ya!
Hi,
I like your theme but it displays only the links in my blogroll categorie. I would like to see it if it displays my other categories too.
Oyvind, the “36 years ago” problem should be fixed in a newer version of Time Since. If not, its a problem with my server, not fauna.
JC, it would be possible to release a Fauna theme for ZenPhoto, and then integrate with a Wordpress website. However, I want Fauna for Wordpress out first, and ZenPhoto 1.0 out too before I do such a thing.
Matthias,
I think Wordpress.com is using Beta 1 of Fauna… that problem is fixed in Beta 2.
How about make the masthead-fauna.jpg *changeable* just like http://www.noscope.com?
wyh,
The masthead is only changable in the options page. I might release the flash app I’m using for my Noscope header at some point, but I won’t build it into Fauna.
I see.
Thank you for your reply and looking forward to get your grogeous flash app release some time:P
Excellent theme and it works perfectly in mu-wordpress too :)
Many thanks for sharing.
I admit that I’m a newb, lease excuse that fact.
I have successfully installed the theme, but I get the error: “The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template. fauna_beta2 Stylesheet is missing.”
Is there something I can do to get things working? Thank you!
-C.
Clever,
Sorry the documentation is incomplete…
You uploaded the fauna_beta2 folder, containing the readme.txt and a fauna folder.
You should only upload the fauna folder IN the fauna_beta2 folder, to your themes directory.
Thank you! Most appreciated. I got it to work.

I don’t know if this is a bug or just an issue that I’m having, but I’ll try and explain.
My site currently has two authors … Heidi and Doug. When you click a post authored by Doug … it says “Blah Blah” was written January 23rd, 2006 by Doug, and filed under Uncategorized.” You can then click Doug’s name and be taken to his author page. However, the link to Heidi’s author’s page goes to a 404 Error: Not Found.
I’ve tried deleting and readding the user Heidi with no luck. I’ve also tried acting as Doug and authoring the post as Heidi, but that creates a new problem. In that case, Heidi’s author page is then linked to that of another (third) user.
I’m sorry if that’s not the clearest. Please let me know if you have any tips or hints. Thank you!

Hey Clever,
It doesn’t SOUND like a problem with Fauna, but I can’t verify that unless you provide me a link to look at…
this release works only in WORDPRESS 2.0 ?
G.Meroni,
No, it should work just fine in 1.5.
Thk……i upgrade my blog…..vscolour.tk thk
I’m not sure whether it would be better to ask here or at Ozh’s blog but I’ve just moved my site over to TextDrive and when I try to access fauna’s theme option menu from the Presentation tab I get a 412 Precondition Fail error. The URL is:
http://mapofthedead.co.uk/weblog/wp-admin/themes.php?page=../themes/fauna/functions.php
I asked over on the TxD forums and it was confirmed that the ‘../’ in the URL was triggering the mod_security system and causing the 412 error. Is there anyway the theme options can be accessed differently or am I going to need to disable mod_security?
Thanks in advance for any answers.
James,
That would be a question for Ozh. I’m sorry I can’t help you further.
just look around..
